National Disability Awareness Week 2023 is currently underway, with the theme: “Inclusion in Action”. It’s a call to include people living with disabilities in the decision-making process of all aspects of community and national life. Laws should be made, policy decisions carved out, and everyday decisions considered with people living with disabilities in mind.

The Bahamas Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities) Act 2014, was enacted to end discrimination against persons with disabilities as well as promote their rights to advance equal opportunities, amongst other provisions
The National Commission For Persons With Disabilities is a statutory body that has been mandated to carryout the provisions of the persons with Disabilities Act. Among other functions, The Commission has additional powers and responsibilities.
The Work of the National Commission For Persons With Disabilities is assisted and administered by the Secretariat of the Commission. The Secretariat is comprised of a team of full-time personnel, who undertakes the day-to-day affairs of The Commission.
Accessible parking spaces must be located on the shortest accessible route from parking to an accessible entrance.
Accessibility in buildings includes stairs, doorways, ramps, walking surfaces, restrooms and showers
The law says that all buildings which the public may access must be accessible to persons with any kind of disability.
